I guess I was busy doing other things!!
This is the new space for information pertaining to bushmeat issues in the world based from the Canadian Association for Bushmeat Awareness (CABA).
Are you asking yourself what is bushmeat??
There is a large problem facing many endangered species in the world. One is habitat destruction, but mainly the problem involves the commercialized hunting of these precious animals. Specifically CABA is concerned with the trade in the great apes of Central West Africa such as Western Lowland Gorillas, Chimpanzees and Forest Elephants.
These animals are long lived, don't have may infants in their lives and cannot sustain prolonged hunting pressure so that when a logging company moves into an area, often hunters are dispatched to feed their workers from the forest. This may involve shooting with high powered rifles, or more often snaring animals which can kill or maim a wide variety of animal, not only the preferred antelope or bush pig. Often a family of apes may be shot at once, sometimes leaving small infants alive who are then moved into villages and towns that end up mistreated in small hotels or grown for the cook pot at a later date. Most countries in Africa restrict the killing of these animals but it is difficult to enforce. Money is needed for park guards and wildlife officers.
Once the infants are found they can be rescued and placed in sanctuary where they are safe and can live their lives in a more natural environment than someone's backyard. CABA has worked for almost eight years with several sanctuaries such as Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund (CWAF), Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC), both in Cameroon and Lwiro in Congo. CABA has raised funds to help support the long term care of gorillas and chimps and I encourage you to check out the websites that I have included. You can make an incredible for someone you love by adopting a gorilla or chimp for birthdays and of course Christmas is approaching! What a great personal gift with no impact on the environment except to help a deserving being across the world!
In the future I will add lots of links and pictures and articles to help you get educated about the Bushmeat Crisis. I hope that you feel this helps and please comment so I know that you're out there whoever you are!
Thanks for listening and Good luck!
